Innovative medicine begins with research. Our research approach is focused on discoveries within the study of genetics in cells and rational drug design. Drug design involves identifying the structure of a tumor and developing medicine that will specifically target it. We have over 120 collaborations with major biotech companies and over 280 with academic centers and have more than 150 clinical trials currently underway.

Once a promising medicine has been identified, we work with leading investigators and patient volunteers in countries around the world to study the safety and efficacy of the agent. In instances where an investigational drug shows efficacy in a difficult-to-treat population, we consider broadening access to these developmental medicines through an Expanded Access Program (EAP) and available regulatory mechanisms. These programs allow patients access to the experimental drug between the time of filing and application for approval with health authorities. Novartis Oncology was one of the first companies to offer truly global Expanded Access Programs.
